Young Living Essential Oils 101

What Are Essential Oils?

  • They are the most powerful part of the plant: the lifeblood of the plant
  • They are distilled from: shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, fruit, rinds, resins, and herbs, etc.
  • Oils consist of over 100 different natural, organic compounds
  • Oils enter and leave the body – leaving no trace behind!

What Are They Used For? Boosting Systems of the Body, Immune Defense, Aroma-therapy, Skincare, First-Aid, Health and Nutritional Supplements, Key ingredient in Cleaning Products and Personal Care Items (DIY All-Natural Recipes), Sleep Aids, Emotions, Pain Management, etc. This list could go on and on…

There are about 300 oils on the earth, but you only need about 10-20 to build a good kit at home for just about everything!

You Do Not Need to Be an Aromatherapist to Use Them! There are three schools of thought on how to use essential oils.  The English apply them topically—rub them on the skin so they absorb into the bloodstream; the French ingest and cook with them; the Germans diffuse and inhale them. Diffusing/Inhaling the oils is the most effective method, because the oils do not have to go through the digestive system before reaching and passing through the blood-brain barrier, which is the goal!

How Do They Enter—and How Long Do They Last?  Tests have shown oils hit the heart, liver, and thyroid in three seconds when inhaled; they were found in the bloodstream in 26 seconds when applied topically. Expulsion of essential oils takes three-six hours in a normal, healthy bod. Because of their size (molecularly smaller than cells and smaller than viruses), oils penetrate your skin more swiftly than anything on the planet!  According to a study by M.D. Jean Valnet, essential oils can affect every cell in the body within 20 minutes—and are then metabolized like other nutrients.

     Oily History:

They were first mentioned by name in the biblical book of Genesis. They mention spicery, balm, and myrrh!  Genesis ends with the burial of Joseph’s father—anointed with myrrh. They have found records of one of the oldest cultures on earth (the Babylonians) placing orders for Cedarwood, Myrrh, and Cyprus. They were used by the Greeks, Egyptians, Medieval Europeans, the Chinese, and Christ—at birth, Jesus was given gold, frankincense and myrrh.  Frankincense is nicknamed the “coconut oil” of all essential oils because it has over 10 thousand uses…and it just happens to be my favorite oil!!!

Do All Brands of Essential Oils Work?  There is no rating system in the United States for essential oils. The closest we get is an FDA requirement that there be 5 percent of actual essential oil in a bottle to label it “pure,” “therapeutic grade,” or “organic.” Lots of companies use synthetic chemicals, and even fragrance!

There are four different types of oils on the earth: Grade A, Grade B, Grade C, and Grade D.  Grade A is truly pure and therapeutic – made from organically grown plants and distilled at low temperatures.

All of Young Living’s Oils are Grade A: That means they were grown on virgin land, never before touched by chemicals. YL goes back five generations to make sure the land is pure. Oils are all that is used for pesticide control, and all fields are hand-weeded. They have an open door policy—you can fly to any farm on any given day, walk through, open any doors and talk to any of the employees! At harvest time, they go out into the fields every hour to make sure the plant is at its peak. Then when it’s ready, they bring it in and distill it at the perfect temperature. Example: Cypress has 288 compounds that actually enact change in the human body, but only 11 if it’s distilled 10 degrees too hot or too cold! They run each of the oils through an eight point test to make sure they meet Young Living standards. Then they’re sent for AFNOR/ISO testing, and third party testing. We consider Young Living essential oils beyond organic —because their standards are so much higher than any other essential oil company out there…and this is why I am so passionate about them!

Grade B Oils are Food Grade—but may contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, chemical extenders, or carrier oils.
Grade C Oils are Perfume Oils that often contain adulterating chemicals. They are known to use solvents to gain a higher yield of oil per harvest. Many solvents are cancerous. Grade C Oils are also typically diluted 80-95 percent with alcohol. This is why buying essential oils from health food stores or online from other companies (even though they claim to be pure /therapeutic) can actually be unhealthy for you!

Grade D is Called “Floral Water” It’s aromatic only—and usually a byproduct of Grade A distillation… so be careful – quality matters!

Check to see if the company grows their own plants and owns their own fields—and controls the entire process from Seed to Seal—from the farm to the bottle. Pesticides, pollution, dilution with carriers, quick distillation using solvents, previously farmed land—all of those factors – affect the quality of an oil.     What Goes Into Making Essential Oils?:  It takes a great deal of work to produce a tiny amount of essential oil: 60 thousand rose blossoms to produce just one single ounce of rose oil. Lavender is abundant, however – 220 pounds will provide 7 pounds of oil. Jasmine flowers must be picked by hand before the sun becomes hot on the very first day they open – making it one of the most expensive oils in the world. It takes eight million hand-picked jasmine blossoms to produce 2.2 pounds of oil! Yikes! A Sandlewood tree must be 30 years old and 30 feet high before it can be cut down for distillation. The price is each oil is determined by how hard it is to distill. It takes three whole days to properly distill frankincense oil! If you see it for $20 a bottle – you must know that it is most definitely adulterated oil!

But a Little Goes a Long Way: Most oils are between 10-30 dollars a bottle. A 5 ml bottle has 90 drops. A 15 mL bottle has 250 drops. Each application is 1-2 drops, meaning even the smaller bottle will get you 45 to 90 applications.

How Do Oils Work When They Hit Your Body?

When a fragrance is inhaled, the odor molecules travel up your nose where they are trapped by olfactory membranes that are protected by the lining of the nose. Each molecule fits like a puzzle piece into a specific receptor cell site that lines the membrane – in the epithelium lining of the nose. Each of these nerve cells are replaced by your body every 28 days. Oils don’t damage your skin cells because they are constantly being replaced. When stimulated, the nerve cell triggers electrical impulses to the gustatory center (where the sensation of taste is perceived), the amygdala (where emotions are stored), and the limbic system of the brain. Because the limbic lobe controls so many body functions, essential oils have profound physical, emotional, mental/psychological, physiological, and even spiritual effects on the body – hence the saying, “Essential oils can transform your body, mind, heart, and soul!”

Are They Safe?

There are certainly oils that are photosensitive—meaning you don’t want to wear them and go outside in the direct sun (mostly citrus—grapefruit, lemon).  As a matter of purpose, always have a carrier oil available when trying essential oils (topically) for the first time, however many people are able to apply oils without one – unless they are considered a “hot” oil.  A carrier oil can actually increase the absorption into your skin, as it helps trap the oil (in a sense) and prevent it from evaporating into the air – allowing more of the precious oil to be absorbed. Because people are exposed to new toxins in our environment, every single day, you never know how your skin will react. If you have a burning sensation or redness, no need to be concerned…simply apply a carrier oil.  That’s your body drawing the oil in too swiftly. The carrier will slow your absorption rate down. The molecules of a carrier oil are larger than those of an essential oil.  Examples of carrier oils include: olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, wheat germ oil, etc…  To be safe, I always use a carrier when working with kids. Their skin is more permeable than ours.

Be careful if using the oils topically near your eyes. Some oils, like peppermint, can cause a burning sensation. If you are working with something near the eye, apply the oil to a q-tip or a toothpick and touch that to the area.

What About Internal Use of Essential Oils? NAHA—one of the top aromatherapy bodies in the United States doesn’t advocate for internal use. Why? Because about 95 percent of all of the essential oil companies out there are NOT SAFE for internal use. They aren’t food grade and aren’t GRAS certified by the FDA.  When the NAHA makes recommendations that encompass ALL essential oil companies, in general, they have to make broad, sweeping statements – just to be safe. NAHA also bases a lot of their decisions on the British model—which advocates topical use only. Many of the British studies, however, are flawed—done at extremely high doses, or in ways the oils aren’t actually used—like pouring a bottle inside the body. Young Living utilizes all three methods – English, French, and German, and the French have been using essential oils internally, and safely, for decades! I, myself, ingest them on a daily basis (as well as apply them topically, inhale them, and diffuse them) for a multitude of health and wellness purposes!

Young Living Can Help You Clean Up Your Act:

Every day, we put things on our skin and into our bodies that have damaging chemicals. The average woman applies 300 chemicals a day to her body just through four things: soaps, makeup, and perfume, and hair care products. Young Living Essential Oils have one ingredient ONLY…lemon, peppermint, lavender, tangerine, oregano…and the like! No additives or synthetic chemicals like many other essential oil companies do. One of the ways you can access your daily toxin intake (from the products you currently use) is to visit the Environmental Working Group’s “Skin Deep” website – or download their app – to check the products for toxicity levels. This is what got me started with going the “clean route” and learning how to choose products that were safe for my body! Better yet, I started making my own products

from scratch (there are a zillion all-natural DIY products online – so it’s not as difficult as one would think)…and I’m not shocked that, essential oils are in ALL of the recipes I’ve found! I am actually in the process of creating an e-book that compiles them all!
